A construction worker has died in Brazil after falling from the roof of the stadium where England will play Italy in their opening game of the 2014 World Cup. The tragedy occurred at the Arena Amazonia in Manaus and adds to the growing concerns over Brazil’s preparations with the 2014 World Cup, with workers already killed at 3 of the 12 World Cup stadiums.
Marcleudo de Melo Ferreira fell from the roof early on Saturday morning and died at around 4am. Reports from Reuters say the 22 year old fell nearly 35 metres after a cable at the Arena Amazonia broke.
A statement read: "Fifa and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) learnt of the death of the worker on Saturday at the Arena Amazonia site with great sadness.
"We would like to send our most sincere condolences to his family, relatives, colleagues and friends."
The preparations for next year’s World Cup have been plagued by stories of construction accidents, unfinished stadiums, works going over budget and massive public protests against government spending on the World Cup, most notably during this year’s Confederations Cup.
