We can all expect a constant stream of Star Wars Episode VII rumours and speculation until its release date in 2015 - and then the Episode VIII and IX speculation will kick off in force (pun intended). One of the most persistent rumours, however, has surrounded Benedict Cumberbatch.

The in-demand actor first raised suspicions about his involvement in the upcoming sequel trilogy after dropping out of Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak, due to start filming next year. He has since denied that he will be participating in the Star Wars films.

However, Latino Review - who have a notable track record in reporting Hollywood inside information (although also their fair share of false rumours) - are adamant that he’ll be appearing in Episode VII. They cite his persistent false denials about the nature of his role in the recent Star Trek: Into Darkness as evidence the Sherlock star isn't above a bit of deception. It does make sense - Into Darkness was directed by J.J. Abrams, who’ll be in the director’s seat for Episode VII.

The website is also reporting that Ireland’s own Saoirse Ronan has ‘read’ for a part, although that’s no confirmation of her actual participation.

Details are thin on the ground about the sequel, but it is expected that the film will focus on the Skywalker and Solo children, three decades after the events of Return of the Jedi. It’s anticipated that original trilogy stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will reprise their roles, with Hamill allegedly already ‘hitting the gym’ in preparation for next year’s shoot.
