As it happened, two of the greatest international rugby players of the modern era ended their careers at almost the same time.
World Cup-winning England fly half announced his decision to retire just before the end of the last campaign and he has been tweeting messages of thanks to many of his former club, Lions and international team-mates.
One of those was Ireland legend and soon-to-be Off The Ball co-presenter Brian O'Driscoll.
