Given the way Mayo have dominated the Connacht championship in the five previous years, the defeat to Galway in this year's semi-final has taken many aback.

Their six-in-a-row provincial tilt came to a surprise end against rivals Galway on Sunday in 1-12 to 0-12 defeat at McHale Park.

Off The Ball got the Galway perspective yesterday when they spoke to Paul Conroy. But what went wrong from the Mayo side?

Ex-Mayo star Billy Joe Padden pointed to issues with the the way the sweeper system was implemented.

"The problem was they just didn't do it well enough. The players weren't sure of their roles. Kevin McLoughlin was too deep, the players out the field didn't get back in and help at all and put any pressure and that's something that we've seen when Mayo have played with a sweeper over the last two years," he explained.

"In the Dublin semi-final last year and the Dublin league game this year, when Mayo win the ball back after getting so many bodies deep in a sweeper system, their counter-attack is really, really poor and they just don't get enough score. That was the same again on Saturday night."
