Last month, Quentin Tarantino's blockbuster Django Unchained was pulled from Chinese cinemas just one minute into a morning screening at the Sanlitun Megabox theatre in Beijing.

The movie has now reopened in China after more than a month in cold storage. But it is languishing at the Chinese Box Office behind Oblivion and Iron Man 3.

However certain scenes have been cut from the original release.

Tarantino's films are considered controversial enough in certain quarters but China's censors are traditionally stricter.

So what has the Chinese government deemed to be unsuitable for its public's viewing and why?

  • A scene depicting lead character Django (Jamie Foxx) naked while undergoing torture with his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) has been cut from the film. Sexually explicit scenes and nudity are generally prohibited in Chinese cinema. Memoirs Of A Geisha and Brokeback Mountain were banned in China for similar reasons.
  • Dr King Schultz's (Christopher Waltz) flashback scene which shows a slave getting mauled by dogs has also been cut due o its violent content.
  • Sony Pictures executive Zhang Miao confirmed that censors had "lowered the height of the splatter of blood." He also confirmed that blood had been "darkened".
  • The films final shootout scene has also been altered.
  • According to the manager of a Beijing cinema, the film has been shortened by one minute in comparison with the original, although China's official press agency Xinhua News Agency claims it is in fact three minutes shorter.
  • However bloggers in China have accused the government of "castrating" the film.
