Keiren Westwood could be out for the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury. Sunderland boss Gus Poyet told reporters the Irish international will undergo surgery on the injury.

Westwood has not played for the Black Cats since November, when he was substituted during a defeat to Hull City after suffering a concussion in a collision with fellow Irish international Paul Mcshane.

Westwood has fallen behind Vito Mannone in the pecking order at the Stadium of Light while he recovered from the concussion. In the meantime Westwood has suffered the shoulder injury that will keep him out for three to four months.

Poyet said Westwood’s surgery has been postponed due to illness and the keeper will likely not appear for the side again this season.

"It has been postponed because of a little illness. You cannot have an operation when you are ill, so he is on antibiotics now," Poyet said.

"I would like to say [he will be out for] three to four months.

"Now, if you are going to think when is the season going to finish, it's probably to the end, yes."
