Turkish football fans have never been famed for their restraint and a strikingly large percentage of the footage we see of the Turkish footballing faithful is filmed at airports as mobs of fans, seemingly baffled by the notion of restraint in the face of regular day to day airport procedure, clamber over each other and the general infrastructure to get closer to a visiting team or newly signed star player.
So when Wesley Sneijder, the man who as recently as 2010 was considered one of the finest attacking midfielders in the game, arrived in Istanbul to join Galastaray for a knock down price of just under €10m it was all the encouragement they needed to mob up and get down the local airfield.
Sneijder has played for some of the world’s biggest, most passionately supported teams but it could be a safe bet to say he hasn’t seen anything like this before.
