Blackburn have signed former Manchester United and England defender Wes Brown.

The 36-year-old joins on a free transfer until the end of the season, after being released by Sunderland at the end of the last campaign.

The player will also be involved in coaching of younger players at the club, having taken some of his badges, and had been training with the club since pre-season.

The experienced defender had been without a club since then.

Brown came through Man United's youth ranks before becoming a fixture in the first team squad for over a decade.

The 23-time England cap made just over 360 appearances for the Reds between 1996 and 2011.

He then made the move to Sunderland in 2011, although injury meant he missed the entire 2012-13 season.

Commenting on the new arrival, Blackburn manager Owen Coyle said: "His pedigree is there for everyone to see. He’s very humble as well, but he knows how to win games. He’s a real leader and he’ll drive other people on, so I think it’s a great signing for the football club."
