Stan Wawrinka has reached the French Open final after overcoming World No 1 Andy Murray in a gruelling five set encounter.

The Swiss player won 7-6, 3-6, 7-5, 6-7, 1-6 to win the semi final at Roland Garros and set himself up for a chance to win his fourth Grand Slam title and second at the French Open.

He will meet either nine time French Open winner and 2017 favourite Rafa Nadal or Austria's Dominic Thiem in the decider on Sunday, with that duo yet to play their semi final on the clay of Roland Garros.

Murray took a tight first set 7-6 but Wawrinka, who lost to the Scot at the same stage last year, fought back to take the second more comfortably.

However, Murray took the third to go two sets to one up, only for Wawrinka to win a very tight set in a tie break.

That set appeared to dent Murray's resolve and his Swiss opponent then upped the ante in the final set, going 5-0 up en route to sealing victory 6-1.
