European Athletics today named Thomas Barr as their Athlete of the Month for April.

The Waterford native has been rewarded for his European-leading 400-metre hurdles time of 49.04 to win at the Tom Jones Classic in Georgia.

The time was good enough to see Barr secure qualification for the World Championships in Beijing in August.

The 22-year-old is Ireland's record holder for the 400 metre hurdles, which he set in Geneva last year.

Barr was also a semi-finalist in that discipline at the 2014 European Athletics Championships in Zurich.
