Seattle Seahawks star Richard Sherman says the critics of protests against racism and police brutality in the US are "missing the point".

The Super Bowl XLVIII winner is the latest to speak out about the level of everyday racism in American society.

It follows Colin Kaepernick who first raised the issue within the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers' decision to not stand for the US anthem.

Sherman delivered a two minute monologue to reporters, in which he took no questions and defended the right of players to protest and to highlight issues of racial inequality and police brutality.

"I think people are still missing the point. The reason these guys are kneeling, the reason we’re locking arms, is to bring people together and make people aware this is not right. It’s not right for people to be getting killed in the street," he said.
