One solitary second.

That's how long British Taekwondo athlete Lutalo Muhammad was from becoming Olympic champion on Friday night in Rio de Janeiro.

The 25-year-old, who won bronze in London 2012, lost in the final second to the Ivory Coast's Cheick Sallah Cisse in the 80kg gold medal fight. It was the first ever gold medal won by the African country.

After the loss, an inconsolable Muhammad spoke to the BBC in one of the most heartbreaking interviews of the Olympic Games so far.

Trying to hold back the tears, the London-born fighter apologised to the British public who stayed up late for disappointing them while admitting he was "distraught" by the result.

It's going to be a long four years for Muhammad to try and decipher what went wrong for him ahead of Tokyo 2020.
