In the annals of Formula One history, Nigel Mansell will always hold a special place in the hearts of motor racing fans.

The 1992 World Champion won 31 Grand Prix and 32 pole positions in an era when he had to mix it with greats of the sport like Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, just to name a few, and was also the last driver personally selected by Enzo Ferrari to drive the famous red machines.

Tonight, he is on Off The Ball for a chat with Joe Molloy and two decades on from his last competitive appearance in an F1 car, there's no better time to remind ourselves of how good the former Williams and Ferrari driver was at his peak.

It wasn't until 1985 that he won his first race in Formula One and it was the following year that he became a regular on the top step of the podium, winning the British Grand Prix the following year.

But his most emotional victory on home soil at Silverstone was 1987 when a comeback from a difficult position saw him defeat team-mate and fellow world championship winner Nelson Piquet:

Known as 'The Lion' by Ferrari fans for his brave driving style, he was one of a long line of drivers who could not bring the drivers' championship back to Maranello. 

However, once he re-joined Williams in 1991, he returned to true competitiveness and enjoyed some epic battles with Senna, including a legendary wheel-to-wheel contest in Spain:  

And 1992 was the year where he enjoyed peerless dominance, a championship win and more battles with Senna, before calling it a day (although he would return in 1994 and 1995):
