Andy Murray made history last night as a gruelling four-set battle with Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro saw the Scottish tennis player become the first man to win multiple Olympic singles titles. 

Representing Great Britain, the Scot followed up his second Wimbledon title with another Olympic gold in Rio, having won his first in London four years ago.

BBC's John Inverdale interviewed him after the match and put it to Murray that he was the "first person to ever win two Olympic tennis gold medals", a fact that was quickly corrected by the three-time Grand Slam winner who pointed out that the women's game had produced two players with more gold medals.

"Well to defend the singles title - I think Venus and Serena have won about four each - it’s obviously not an easy thing to do and I had to fight unbelievably hard to get it tonight as well," he said.

Serena Williams has won the women's Olympic singles titles once and also has three doubles titles shared with her sister Venus, who won a single's title in the Sydney Games in 2000.
