The month of June regularly brings up many sporting anniversaries from the World Cup and European Championships. Today marks the 25th anniversary since Ireland knocked out Romania at Italia 90 in a penalty shoot out.

As we all know by now, Packie Bonner save the Romanians last penatly taken by Daniel Timofte. David O'Leary scored the shootouts final penalty as Ireland reached the last eight.

From listening to George Hamilton's commentary of the game, it can be realised how uncommon penalty shootouts were to the Irish public as he constantly reminds the viewing public of the rules. At a time when Irish television only consisted of two channels, the game was shown on both as the Six One news took coverage of the shootout during the bulletin.
