Once upon a time, players used to simply raise their arms and take the acclaim of their team-mates when celebrating goals. But things have changed in the last 30 years.

Here are some of the ones that have caught the eye in recent World Cup tournaments and feel free to make your own suggestions.

Damien Duff (2002)

This is not me being biased because he is a Boy in Green, but there was something appropriate about Duffer's Sayonara celebration on Japanese soil after scoring the third in a 3 - 0 win over Saudi Arabia in the 2002 group stages.

Having watched the Saudi's being put to the sword by Germany in a crazy 8 - 0 scoreline, the former Ireland winger probably had a good idea that he would find the net when he faced the Asian side later in the tournament. So he had the time to concoct this culturally appropriate celebration as the Boys in Green marched into the second round.

Duff, who announced a move to Melbourne, is also on Off The Ball tonight where Ger will ask him about his recollections of 2002.

Marco Tardelli (1982)

This one also has an Irish connection as Marco Tardelli would later become Giovanni Trapattoni's assistant.

32 years ago though, he was netting a goal for his beloved Italia in the World Cup final against Germany and his celebration is pure ecstasy (not the drug kind of course!)

Roger Milla (1990)

You may have heard of a man called Roger Milla and his corner flag dance...

Bebeto (1994)

It has been copied often in the intervening years but Bebeto's 'Rock the Baby' celebration to mark the birth of his third child remains a favourite...

Pape Bouba Diop (2002)

Memorable, but maybe not for celebratory quality, Pape Bouba Diop and his team-mates paid homage to his Senegal jersey after scoring the goal that shocked France...

Brian Laudrup (1998)

I still remember someone copying this 'Brian Laudrup' celebration in a Mohill Primary Schoolyard soon after World Cup 1998.

Then again, you would want to show off if you'd scored against Brazil in a World Cup knockout match...

Rashid Yekini (1994)

One of the celebrations that has stood the test of time is Nigeria striker Rashidi Yekini's goal net exaltation after the Super Eagles beat Bulgaria...

Ahn Jung Hwan (2002)

You may remember Ahn Jung Hwan scoring the winner in South Korea's controversial win over Italy on home soil. But his celebration of a goal against USA in the group stages was far more memorable.

The ice-skating celebration was a way of protesting the decision at the 2000 Olympics when a Korean speedskater was disqualified for "cross-tracking" a US rival, thereby ceding the gold medal to America.
