A lot of things happen through the titular Rear Window in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic movie, all seen by the wheelchair-bound photographer played by Jimmy Stewart. The movie is being screen tonight in the Omniplex cinemas in Cork, Rathmines and Limerick in association with The Right Hook.
But if you fancy taking in everything that Jimmy Stewart’s character does during the thriller, you can take a look at this time lapse, which pieces together the entire panorama of his view from the lone vantage point in front of the window.
Edited together by Jeff Desom, the video shows everuthing that happens throughout the movie in all its voyeuristic and chronological glory. The technical reasons why it looks so good and translates so well to the framed shot is that the entire Hitchcock movie was shot from the same angle, meaning processing the images was, for want of a better word, fairly straightforward.
But making things look easy is no easy feat, and it clearly took hours and days of work to get perfectly right. The payoff is worth it, though, a mesmerising mix of Hichtcockian direction all tied together in less than three minutes.
