Valtteri Bottas has been confirmed as Lewis Hamilton's new team-mate at Mercedes.

The Finnish driver has taken the other seat vacated by 2016 Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg's surprise retirement at the end of last season.

As a result of the move, 2008 world championship runner up Felipe Massa has done a U-turn on his own decision to call it a day.

The former Ferrari driver will re-join Williams to replace Bottas for the new season.

German Pascal Wehrlein has moved to Sauber on a busy day of driver announcements.

He had been linked with the Mercedes race seat now occupied by Bottas.

Bottas has been at Williams since he first started out in Formula 1 at the beginning of the 2013 season.

That debut season saw him finish 17th in the driver's standings.

However, the 2014, 2015 and 2016 seasons have all seen him achieve Top 8 placings in the championship, with the 2014 campaign the most successful as he finished fourth in the standings.

The 27 year old has yet to taste victory as an F1 driver but has achieved second placed finishes on two occasions, both of which came in back to back races in 2014 in Great Britain and Germany.

In total he has managed to secure nine podium finishes at Grand Prix.
