UTV Ireland made a strong debut with the Irish television-viewing public last night, with an episode of Emerdale the 10th most watched broadcast on Irish screens on New Year’s Day.
RTÉ One proved the TV winner of the day, with the top seven most watched programmes on January 1st. The state broadcaster’s second channel RTÉ 2 failed to break into the top 10, while TV3 pipped UTV Ireland to eighth and ninth position.
Current affairs and news programming proved the biggest ratings winner, with RTÉ’s Nine O’Clock and Six-One bulletins the most watched programmes of the day – with 572,400 and 489,100 viewers respectively.
In the battle of the soaps, the BBC-produced Eastenders came out on top for RTÉ, followed by the Irish channel's Fair City and ITV’s Emerdale – the latter having just moved to the UTV Ireland after airing on TV3 since 2001.
