While a 9-foot statue of Bruce Banner’s angry alter ego would be the new centrepiece of Northlake library, the money raised will also go towards funding more traditional library services. The team behind the project are also looking to purchase a 3D printer, iMac computer with editing software and other creation tools with the €23,200 they’re looking to raise via crowd funding site indiegogo. Library members will be encouraged to design and create their own comic creations.

The money will also be used to expand their existing graphic novel selection, with one worker modestly suggesting they want to have “the best graphic novel collection in the world”. The fundraisers believe that illustrated comics and books can be an effective way of introducing many readers to the wider world of literature, especially those still learning the English language. The Hulk was chosen because "just as Dr. Bruce Banner transforms into the Hulk, we want our library community members to make their own personal transformations through books, programs, and awesome new equipment."

Pointing out that library attendance is increasing at the same time budgets & funding are decreasing, the people behind the project say their overall goal is “to promote digital literacy and provide patrons with a spot where they can create their own comics, art, movies and experiment with digital design and photo editing.”

Like most crowd-funding projects, Northlake library are also offering perks for anyone who donates – ranging from signed graphic novels and specialised library cards to having your name & photo included on a plaque beside the proposed statue.

Summing up their reasoning behind the initiative, the Northlake librarians and volunteers write that “the project will show off the fun side of the library and get the community talking. The HULK will force patrons to look at the library in a whole new way.”
