The proposals are said to place automatic filters - or "unavoidable choice" - on all new Internet connections. It will affect all devices that connect to the filtered network. The filter can only be switched off by an adult account holder, with the intention being that children and teenagers can no longer access adult material by ensuring parents have more control over the network.
As well as the automatic filter, the government are also said to be planning to place stricter adult content filters on new mobile devices, as well as a full ban on accessing pornography through public wi-fi. The proposed changes will also introduce a ban on 'extreme' or violent pornography, and make it illegal to be in possession of such content.
The Daily Mail, who announced the proposals after allegedly getting advance access to a speech by David Cameron, has boasted that it's partially responsible for the changes after waging a campaign against online pornography. They write "in a victory for the Daily Mail, David Cameron announced the move among a series of measures cracking down on against the tide of web sleaze." They also report Cameron and the government will urge search engines to further limit access to pornographic material.
