UEFA have fined Ajax €10,000 for their fans’ "display of a provocative and inappropriate banner." The Ajax fans were protesting the negative influence of money on modern football and the high costs of following a football club. The Ajax fans displayed banners during a game against Manchester City as the visit of the wealthy English club, owned by a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family, was seen as an opportunity to oppose the billionaire investors whose financial involvement in the game has changed its landscape drastically.

The banners read - "€80 for the away section is ridiculous" (in sympathy with the visiting fans) and “Against modern football”, while also displaying a cartoon depiction of a sheikh holding a bag of money with a red line going through the image in the style of a stop sign.

UEFA’s decision to fine clubs in relation to protests of this kind comes shortly after stewards at The Emirates removed a banner held up by Manchester City fans which protested the high price of tickets at the ground.
