UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has set his sights on a bout with former champion George St. Pierre in the near future.
Since winning the belt against Robbie Lawlor in 2016, Woodley has defended it twice against Stephen Thompson - a majority draw and a razor-thin decision victory. He is due to fight Demian Maia next.
The Brazilian is currently on a seven fight win streak including victories over Gunnar Nelson, Carlos Condit and Jorge Masvidal.
The returning GSP was originally signed to fight middleweight champion Michael Bisping but the Canadian won't be ready to make his competitive return until later this year.
UFC President Dana White has since cancelled the bout insisting Bisping must fight Yoel Romero as his next contender. The Briton has not fought since October and White was unwilling to hold up the division any longer.
Woodley is now calling for a bout with GSP and speaking on the MMAHour recently, he said: "I’m the best welterweight in the world and I feel like Georges St-Pierre should’ve fought me.
“He should’ve come back. Fighting Bisping, I think that was the cowardly move. He’s going to fight someone who doesn’t have the ability to concuss him like I would, or Johny Hendricks would, or Robbie Lawler would."
Woodley has been regularly calling for a money-fight despite his relative lack of draw as a pay-per-view fighter.
A win over Maia would give him a legitimate claim to go looking for a bout with GSP or another high profile name but until then, he should focus on cleaning out the welterweight division.
