Two Irish Olympians have been investigated for allegedly placing inappropriate bets on events at Rio 2016.

The athletes, who have not been named, were earlier reported to have been reprimanded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for breaching new gambling rules.

The Olympic Council of Ireland confirmed this morning that two boxers were "spoken to" about "inappropriate betting activity during the Games".

"The matter is still under review so there will be no further comment at this stage," a spokesperson said in a statement.

It is not yet known when or how the bets were placed.

Gambling by Olympians is prohibited under IOC rules but not illegal.

A new code of ethics introduced by the organisation last year bans athletes from betting on Olympic events or providing inside information to gamblers.
