Thomas Barr finished second in the heats of the 400m hurdles and is through to the next round.

The Waterford athlete set a time of 48.93 to finish just behind Keisuke Nozawa of Japan.

That was a season's best time for Barr.

His run put him comfortably in the qualification spots for a place in the semi-final, setting the 10th fastest time in the heats.

Annsert Whyte who was fastest in the heats overall, was 0.56 seconds faster than Barr.
