Thomas Barr has just missed out on a medal in the 400 metres hurdles at Rio 2016.

After a slow start, the Team Ireland athlete finished fourth in the final, in a time of 47.97 - just 0.05 seconds off bronze - and a new national record.

Barr had qualified for the final with an Irish record time in Tuesday night's semi-final.

Like the semi-final, Barr finished very strongly in the final to almost edge into the bronze medal position.

Kerron Clement of USA won gold with a season's best 47.73, ahead of Boniface Mucheru Tumuti of Kenya (silver) and Yasmani Copello of Turkey who finished in a time of 4.92, edging out the strong-finishing Barr by the tightest of margins.
