Roberto Martinez's hiring as Belgium manager was one of the shock appointments of the summer.

In what looks like an even bigger surprise, French World Cup winner Thierry Henry has joined the Belgian backroom team. Henry joins Martinez, with former Everton assistant manager Graeme Jones.

The announcement was made on Friday morning, as Belgium named their squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Cyprus and friendly against Spain.

Henry's international playing career is well documented. He is a World Cup winner with France in 1998. He was also part of the team that won Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The French striker retired from playing in 2014 after a spell with the New York Red Bulls in MLS. He has since worked with Arsenal's youth squad in various capacities.

Despite signing with the Belgian Football Federation, Henry is expected to keep his position with Sky Sports as a Premier League analyst.
