Ireland's hopes of qualification are hanging by a thread after they drew 1-1 with Scotland at the weekend in the Aviva Stadium. Jonathan Walters gave the home side the lead before half time before the Scots equalised 60 seconds into the second half courtesy of a John O'Shea own goal from a Shaun Maloney strike.
Former Chelsea and Ireland defender Paddy Mulligan joined Oisin Langan on this weeks Monday Rewind to discuss the game and state of the Irish squad. Reports last night also suggested that Ireland will begin qualification for the 2018 World Cup as fourth seeds.
Mulligan feels that while the effort the squad has shown is admirable, the quality simply isn't there to be near the top of the table at international level. He singled out Daryl Murphy calling him a "very good Championship player".
Everton duo Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy were also mentioned by Mulligan for poor performances at the weekend. Coleman's crosses throughout the game were "appalling", and Mulligan also felt that McCarthy and Wes Hoolahan lack a consistent cutting edge.
The lack of recent goals were also criticised by Mulligan. He stated that Robbie Keane is still the best goalscorer in the squad but Martin O'Neill lacks options for "instinctive finishers".
