Name: Viktor Fischer
Club: Ajax
Nationality: Danish
Position: Winger
Who is he?
The 19-year-old started off playing youth football in his native Denmark before treading a path well-trodden by many of his countrymen like Christian Eriksen and Lucas Andersen, ending up at Ajax.
Joining the Amsterdam giants famed academy at the age of 17 in 2011, it did not take him long to reach the first team via good performances in the NextGen series.
Achievements
Fischer made his first team debut for Ajax last season and it turned out to be a memorable campaign for the teenager.
In all he netted 10 Eredivisie goals in 23 games with highlights including a brace and Man of the Match award in the derby against Feyenoord, making his Champions League debut, and establishing himself as first choice on the left flank for the Dutch champions.
In May, Ajax named him their Young Talent of the Year. Last weekend he scored in Ajax’s 3 – 0 win on the opening day of 2013-14.
At international level he has also been recognised. An undisputed star at U17 level, he scored an astonishing 20 goals in 30 games at that age group for Denmark, starring as the Danes reached the 2011 U17 World Cup semi-finals.
He made his senior debut for Denmark last November and has two caps.
Attributes
Fischer has not had trouble finding the goal nets. The archetypal Ajax winger, he combines an eye for goal with intelligent movement.
His favoured position is the left wing where he excels at creating and moving into space.
His composure, ball control and technique are also highly commended. An interesting attribute to note is his big game mentality which has seen him score against Ajax’s biggest rivals Feyenoord and PSV.
Check out some of his goals below for the Ajax youth team and the seniors where his composure in front of goal, movement and ball skills are apparent.
Potential
Predictably, there has been interest from Europe’s big clubs but Fischer has made a wise decision to extend his Ajax contract to 2017.
Staying in Dutch football will aid his development, particularly at the club he is at.
Secondly, his style of play – that of a goalscoring winger – is very much in vogue in the modern game and if harnessed correctly, he has the potential to reach elite status.
Plays a bit like…Ajax coach Frank De Boer has compared him to Andres Iniesta, although Fischer is more comfortable out wider than the Spain and Barcelona legend.
