Concussion is a hot topic in sport these days. Rugby and American football are the two sports which we most regularly hear linked with concussion – be it through stories of injured players or calls for improved protection through rules and increased vigilance.

Last Friday night, in the televised game between Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers, Shamrock Rovers keeper Barry Murphy hit his head on his own post and appeared to be out cold on the pitch. It was several minutes before Murphy as back on his feet, following medical treatment. But was he concussed? Was there a medical concern about him returning to the game? Giving all we know about concussion now, and the potentially devastating consequences o not properly respecting a head injury, was it right to let Murphy continue?

Stuey Byrne and Roddy Collins joined Off the Ball for our weekly Tuesday night look at the League of Ireland and the topic of concussion and Murphy’s situation were up for debate. Along with that there was a look back at a week when, of the pre-season title contenders, perhaps only Shamrock Rovers will feel they remain on the right track.
