The Irish footballing community are coming to terms with the death of Mark Farren.

Farren was Derry City's top scorer since they joined the League of Ireland in the 1980's. He died after a long illness, aged 33.

Daniel McDonnell from the Irish Independent covered Farren at his peak with Derry City and spoke to Newstalk Sport's Oisin Langan about the Donegal striker.

"He was Player of the Year in 2005. Maybe the national focus is disconnected from Derry. Their players don't get the same level of focus up there, maybe because of the location. Mark didn't generate the hype he would have if he played for one of the Dublin clubs, doing what he did."

"For someone who didn't have a great time earlier in his career, he was devastatingly quick and "an incredibly natural goal scorer. You wonder where his career might have gone with a bit more luck along the way."
