The Guardian's Barry Glendenning got himself into some hot water today with people in Italy today after comments in his column.
When writing about Napoli's supposed interest in Manchester United's Danny Welbeck, the Irishman said "the club from one of Italy’s mafia strongholds will need to make Manchester United and Welbeck himself an offer they can’t refuse."
The Guardian Football Weekly regular's column is always written in a jocular fashion but some people on Twitter were not happy with him linking the mafia and Naples.
@SAVERIOSTRANGE1 It was a joke, about The Godfather.

@Hayesur I made a joke about a city - some wordplay relating to a famous movie. Why on earth are you getting your smalls in a twist over it?

@Hayesur Are you suggesting all Irish people should behave in the same way? If that's not a lazy stereotype, what is?

@MiguelDelaney @iainmacintosh @eaamalyon The good thing about being roundly abused in Italian is that I don't understand any of it.
