Little has changed for Irish football with a 3-0 defeat to Germany in Cologne. Noel King’s side were berated by some and given a passing grade by others. In the overall picture of Irish football it doesn’t feel like an era defining week.
What has caused debate and stirred emotion, however, were the comments of German manager Joachim Low, who remarked that Ireland “Will never play any kind of holding game or pass the ball around like Barcelona do.
“You will never see any Irish team playing like that – so it doesn’t matter who coaches them.”
His remarks have offended plenty, while others have admitted Low might have a point, even if it isn’t one anybody likes to hear about their team.
Is Low right? Can Irish fans realistically expect to see their national team play free flowing football when our players are not coached in that manner?
Stuey Byrne, Colin Young of the Daily Mail and Stephen Hunt were on today’s Off the Ball for the Football Panel, and discussed the merits of Low’s comments with Joe Molloy.
There was also discussion on Noel King’s time as manager and the upcoming Kazakhstan, as well as an extended report from Dave McIntyre, who spoke with King and others at the Ireland training camp in Dublin.
