Former footballer Adam Johnson's trial heard evidence from the teenage girl involved in the case on Tuesday morning.

The Guardian report that the emotional evidence was given via video-link from the teenage girl, now 16-years-old, but aged 15 at the time of the incidents.

She stated that she was not trying to protect Johnson as a result of the fact that he had subsequently tried to make her out to be a liar.

The girl, who cannot be named, told jurors at Bradford Crown Court about sex acts which she says took place in the former Sunderland winger's Range Rover.

The court had heard how she did not mention some of the more serious activity at first because she was trying to protect her idol Johnson. She stated that she had sent messages about some of the acts to friends on social media as "I was trying to big myself up as any 15-year-old girl would. When you idolise someone and that happens to you, you’re not thinking at the time".

On Tuesday she was asked whether she was still trying to protect the footballer, under cross examination by Orlando Pownall QC, defending Johnson, but stated that she wasn't "because he did nothing to protect me and he made me out to be a liar".

Johnson, 28, denies two charges of sexual activity with a child under 16. He has admitted one similar charge and one of grooming, for which he will be sentenced after the trial.
