One of the major talking point of the last week has been rumblings of a relationship breakdown between media and Ireland’s premier sports team.

Joe Molloy was joined by Gavin Reilly and Keiran Shannon on the Sunday Paper Review to discuss a number of pressing issues that are taking up the papers, including the worrying trend of developing rifts forming between national media and teams/individuals.

There have been numerous issues fuelling speculation about the potential rifts, including that of Dublin Manager Jim Gavin’s fallout with RTE. Gavin has refused to speak with the broadcaster after a dispute over DVD match footage that is given out for analysis, in return for more interview time with managers and players.

OTB’s Joe Molloy says Confusion has also reigned high as to why Joe Schmidt has cancelled Monday’s media briefing, with members of the print media. Molloy cited the lack of clarity as to why it’s becoming a frustrating issue for all involved.

“We don’t know why Joe Schmidt has cancelled the Monday briefings for the print media. We don’t know why Jim Gavin isn’t talking to RTE. We haven’t heard it from Gavin himself, so we are operating in a vacuum here."

Gavin Reilly clarified the situation, in regards to Gavins’s blackout with RTE, but he  believes the lack of clarity of the core issue, is creating the disputes.

“The RTE reporter who sought to speak to Jim Gavin was told; ‘Co-operation is a two-way street.’ – Which does suggest there is truth to the DVD complaint.”

The Paper Review Panel say they are worried about potential commercial damage any further disputes and blackouts may have on the organisations and associations, in terms of revenue and sponsorship.
