World Number One Rory McIlroy and Offaly's Shane Lowry are both in strong positions are the first day of the WGC World Matchplay Championsips in California.

The new format to the competition also sees a new venue with TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, the host for the week.

All 64 golfers are guaranteed three games, compared to the previous straight knock out format.

Yesterday, McIlroy defeated former USPGA Champion Jason Dufner by 5&4.

He faces US Ryder Cup star Brandt Snedeker later today in Group 1.

Only the winners of each group get a place in the last 16.

In Group 13, Shane Lowry defeated compatriot Graeme McDowell on the 18th hole to win 1up.

Lowry plays American favourite Rickie Fowler today, while McDowell faces Harris English knowing a win is vital to not be knocked out in the group stages.

McIlroy, Lowry and McDowell will all be in action again tomorrow with only a maximum of two of them being able to reach the last 16.
