Glenn Whelan's near decade long career at Stoke City could be coming to an end.

The Ireland midfielder has a year remaining on his contract, but Stoke chairman Peter Coates says they will not stand in his way if a suitable offer arrives.

Whelan made 30 Premier League starts for a Stoke side that finished 13th last season.

"If someone comes in for Glenn and Glenn wants to go we wouldn't want to stand in his way. I don't predict things like that in football but it's a possibility," he said to Sky Sports News, while also clarifying that manager Mark Hughes will remain in place despite missing out on the top half of the Premier League table last season.

Whelan joined Stoke from Sheffield Wednesday in 2008 and has remained a fixture in the team under a succession of manager.

The Ireland international has made more than 300 appearances for the club in all competitions.
