Former Open Champion Stewart Cink has revealed he is to step away from golf to care for his wife who is battling breast cancer.

The 42-year-old made the announcement on Twitter on Tuesday night to his 1.1million followers. The Georgia native has not played on Tour since missing the cut at the RBC Heritage last month.

Cink has not won on tour since defeating Tom Watson in a play-off at The Open in Turnberry in 2009. Last year he only recorded one top-ten finish on the PGA Tour.

The Georgia native was a regular feature on American teams throughout the last decade. He featured in five Ryder Cup teams, including the 2006 event in The K Club, along with four appearances at the Presidents Cup.

No time-frame has yet been revealed for Cink's return to the game, although he added in the statement that "hopefully that day will come quickly."
