Former Ireland international Stephen McPhail has signed for Shamrock Rovers.

The 34-year-old midfielder has agreed a one-year contract with the Hoops, which will be a major boost to Trevor Croly's squad.

The former Leeds United and Cardiff City playmaker will officially link up with Rovers later this month when his short-term contract with English Championship side Sheffield Wednesday comes to an end.

Meanwhile, Rovers are among 15 clubs that have been awarded Premier Division licences by the FAI's Independent Club Licensing Committee ahead of the start of the new season.

All 12 top flight clubs have passed the necessary financial tests to compete in the Premier Division.

Cobh Ramblers and Wexford Youths have both been granted conditional First Division licences pending the arrival of further paperwork.

Shamrock Rovers have also been granted a First Division licence for their A team, which will see them compete in the second tier.
