Former Ireland defender Sean St Ledger is without a club again.

The centre-back, who turned 30 yesterday, has been released by Mick McCarthy at Championship side Ipswich Town.

St Ledger, who scored Ireland's only goal at Euro 2012 against Croatia, was released by Leicester City in May.

He was given a short term deal at promotion-chasing Ipswich at the end of last month but Tractor Boys manager McCarthy explained why he did not extend the defender's stay at Portman Road.

"With Sean, his contract was up after the Brentford game and he has left the club.

"We have a really good young defender in Matt Clarke and I would play him in front of Sean. We also have Elliott Hewitt on a 24 hour recall from Colchester, where he is on loan, so we have cover in defensive positions."
