Sports Minister meets with Attorney-General over Rio ticket scandal

A meeting between Sports Minister Shane Ross and the Attorney-General Máire Whelan is underway at the Department of Sport.

The two are discussing setting up an inquiry into ticket touting at the Olympic Games in Rio.

The IOC and the company at the centre of the Irish ticket distribution Pro10 both say they will fully comply with any inquiry.

In a statement released this afternoon, the council also said it will be commissioning its own independent inquiry into the matter.

"The previously announced internal inquiry by the OCI has been discontinued," the statement adds.

After arriving home from Rio yesterday to deal with the matter, Mr Ross said an investigation into what went on needs to be credible.

He said he expects the OCI internal investigation to stop and that they will fully co-operate with the new independent inquiry.

Minister Ross admitted the ticket touting scandal had somewhat overshadowed Ireland's performance in the games.

When asked about legal advice the OCI received - reportedly suggesting they try to "put Shane Ross back in his box" - the minister had this to say:
