South African rugby coach Heyneke Meyer will not seek a renewal when his contract ends at the end of the month.

Meyer oversaw South Africa's World Cup campaign that saw them finish third with a victory over Argetina in the third-place play-off. Despite finishing the tournament strongly, South Africa were the victims of one of the greatest upsets in the history of the sport when a team of veterans was beaten at the death by Japan.

"I have realised that, as much as I still have a lot to offer, the time has come for change," said Meyer.

"My integrity has always been very important and I feel I can leave with my head held high."

An apology in October following the defeat to Japan does not seem to have been enough and the former Leicester Tigers coach will forever be remembered as the coach who was in charge when South Africa were felled by Japan. He had been in charge since 2012.
