Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given says he thinks it is time for Giovanni Trapattoni to be replaced as Ireland manager.

Speaking to TalkSport, the 37-year-old said Trap had "a good run" but it was "time for someone else to take the reins".

However he denied that there was any trouble between the players and the manager during his time in the dressing room.

"There's never been a problem at all. One of the problems probably is the language barrier. Sometimes it is difficult for him to get his message across with his lack of English."

Speaking about the reasons for Ireland's struggles against the likes of Sweden, Given says 'people forget we are a small nation".

"We're competing against the rugby guys, against Gaelic football, against hurling in Ireland as well so that narrows it down a little. It's difficult to produce so many players."
