Former FIFA president Joao Havelange has passed away.

The Brazilian, who was 100-years-old, was the predecessor to Sepp Blatter at the pinnacle of world football.

He resigned as FIFA's honorary president in April 2013 following an investigation into bribery allegations.

Havelange spent 24 years as FIFA president between 1974 and 1998, having taken over from Englishman Stanley Rous, who had been criticised by emerging nations in Africa and Asia who had wanted to have greater representation at the World Cup which had then been dominated by European and South American teams to a greater extent than it is now.

Havelange became the first non-European to take on the FIFA presidency and earned support from the developing world.

However, his lengthy rule was dogged by allegations of corruption.
