Seamus 'Cheddar' Plunkett has resigned from his position as manager of the Laois hurling team.

This is the second time for Plunkett to step down in his four-year stint at the helm, after temporarily leaving last year in response to two players playing a senior club challenge match days before a Leinster championship game against Offaly. He was later convinced to return to the squad where Laois recorded the best result in their history, defeating Offaly for the first time in the Leinster Hurling Championship since 1972.

Offaly exacted revenge however in this year's provincial championship and Laois were later dumped out of the qualifiers by Clare.

The County Board will meet in the coming days to begin looking for a successor.
