Scotland rugby captain Greig Laidlaw has been ruled out of the rest of the Six Nations.

The 31 year old was withdrawn from the field of play during their defeat against France at the weekend and will definitely miss their next three matches with ankle ligament damage.

Laidlaw scored 12 of Scotland's 27 points in their opening win over Ireland, including the two penalties in the last 10 minutes which secured the Scots' 27-22 win.

The Scottish Rugby team's official website confirmed the fact that Laidlaw is ruled out of the remainder of the tournament: "Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2017 RBS 6 Nations with an ankle injury.

"A scan undertaken at his club, Gloucester, confirmed the clinical suspicion that the 58-times capped scrum-half sustained ligament damage midway through the first-half of Sunday’s test match against France.

"The extent of the damage is such that he will take no further part in the current championship.

Laidlaw will see a specialist later in the week to determine the best course of management and estimated time out of the sport."

Scotland's next Six Nations fixture is against Wales at home at Murrayfield Stadium.
