The Austrian-American actor has been a registered Republican for many years and was voted Governor of California in 2003.

He's a fan of the current US President, but insists that Democrat Barack isn't funny enough for the role.

"He gives fantastic speeches, but is awful at telling jokes," he explained to German magazine Tele 5.

"It's so important to make people laugh before you start on the serious topics. Ronald Reagan was an expert when it came to that, just like Bill Clinton. Maybe that's why I'm so successful; because I don't just make action movies, I'm also funny."

Arnold, 66, didn't grow up in privileged circumstances and had to work his way to the top.

However, he always saw himself hitting the big time.

"I always imagine myself on the winner's podium with the cup in my hand and everyone else beneath me," he revealed.

"I saw myself running a country. Because I could see it so clearly, I believed it."

Despite having many films under his belt, the star just wants to keep going.

He's also eager to get back behind the camera, after helming TV film Christmas in Connecticut.

"I'm hungry to be the best. I have to get out there and prove to myself I can do it," he enthused.

"I loved [directing]. As soon as I feel I have the time and patience, I'll get going."
