The move into feature directing is just the latest endeavour in the multi-talented star’s career.  As well as her acting career in both independent films and blockbusters like The Avengers, she has also released two music albums and contributed to others. Her first record Anywhere I Lay My Head saw her tackling a number of songs by Tom Waits.

The 28 year-old Johansson has previously directed a short film called These Vagabond Shoes, starring Kevin Bacon. It was included on the DVD of the New York, I Love You anthology film.

Johansson is not the only young Hollywood star to be eyeing up a directorial career. Ellen Page is attached to direct a film called Miss Stevens, due in 2014. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s first feature Don Jon premiered at Sundance earlier this year to generally positive reviews. Canadian actress Sarah Polley has directed four feature films, including last year’s Take This Waltz and her recent & positively received documentary Stories We Tell.

The new generation of actor-directors follow in the footsteps of many other well known faces that made the jump behind the camera, including Tom Hanks, Ben Affleck, Diane Keaton and Robert de Niro.
