Scarlett Johansson's voice-only role as a computer has earned the popular actress a lot of early praise, culminating in her winning the Best Actress award at the Rome Film Festival earlier this month. While there's still a possibility Johansson will receive an Oscar nomination, her acclaimed performance's further awards' potential has hit something of a roadblock with the news that it won't be eligible for a Golden Globes nomination.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros., who are distributing the film, were informed by the group behind the Golden Globes - the Hollywood Foreign Press Association - that the actress is not eligible. This is not the first time an actor has been disqualified for not making a traditional on-screen appearance: Andy Serkis has previously been denied a nomination for his motion capture and voice work on The Hobbit and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Warner Bros. say they will continue the awards campaign for Johannson, and will be hoping her work will be recognised by groups such as the Screen Actors Guild
In Her, Johansson - currently on Irish screens in Don Jon - provides the voice of a computer named Samantha, who ends up developing romantic 'feelings' for her owner Theodore (played by Joaquin Phoenix). Interestingly, Johansson was a last minute addition to the cast. Samantha Morton had been on set to provide and record the voice during the film's shooting process. However, during editing Jonze decided the character needed to be taken in a different direction. Director Jonze has stressed, "I love Samantha [Morton]. I've been friends with her forever and I hope we make lots of things together in the future".
Her also stars Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde and Chris Pratt. It's due to be released in Ireland on the 10th of January. You can check out the trailer for the film below:
