Manchester United are up to third in the Premier League following a 2-0 defeat of Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney got both goals: the first from the penalty spot after John O'Shea committed a foul in the box, but Wes Brown was wrongly shown the red card.

Southampton's Champions League hopes have suffered another blow with a 1-0 defeat at West Brom. Saido Berahino's early goal made the difference at the Hawthorns.

Tim Sherwood has now lost his first two games as Aston Villa manager - this time going down 1-0 at Newcastle.

Hull are just four points off the dropzone after Peter Crouch's looping header gave Stoke a 1-0 win in their meeting at the Britannia.

Swansea will feel their European hopes are still alive after a Kieran Trippier own goal gave them a 1-0 win at Burnley.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace have edged closer to mid-table security with a 3-1 win at West Ham.
